Sonography of Osteosarcoma in Dogs

(Sonographie von Osteosarkomen bei Hunden)

Large soft tissue sarcoma in a 10 yr-old mixed breed dog. The craniocaudal radiograph of the elbow of this dog shows severe soft tissue swelling and an irregular new bone formation and lysis involving the humeral condyle and proximal radius and ulna. The convex sonographic probe was placed in transverse plane to obtain images A and B, at the level of the humeral diaphysis (HD) and humeral condyle (HC), respectively. Note the heterogeneous mass (arrowheads and between calipers) partly encircling the humerus of this dog.

Fig.2:  Ultrasonographic evaluation of a destructive / productive left proximal humeral lesion. Note the break in cortical bone (arrow) with displacement of a fragment peripherally (arrow with *)

Fig.3: Ultrasonographic evaluation of an intramedullary mass measuring 1.12 x 1.10 cm involving the right distolateral femur. Note the displacement of multiple fragments of cortical bone peripherally (arrows).

Fig.4: Ultrasonographic evaluation of a left distal femoral
lesion. Note the highly irregular appearance to the cortical bone (arrows) because of a destructive lesion with a highly productive component.

Fig.6: Ultrasonographic evaluation. Note the irregularity of the cortex and multiple sites of cortical discontinuity (arrows).
